Massage Therapy for Scalene Pain
Massage therapy is a fantastic treatment to decrease muscle spasms
and pain. Often muscle spasms create dull and sharp pain with movement.
They can also lead to joint sprains and headaches. Sometimes muscle
spasms can compress an artery or nerve leading to radiating pain,
numbness, tingling, and weakness.
Scalene Syndrome
The scalene muscles run from the side and front of the neck down to
the first few ribs. They help support the neck in its normal movements.
They also help the rib cage lift during strenuous breathing. The scalenes
muscles also help the neck laterally flex to the shoulder.
The scalene muscles can become injured and produce a significant
amount of pain. A larger injury to the muscle produces a trigger
point that refers pain down the chest, back, arm, or even into the
hand. If the pain reaches the hand it tends to effect the thumb
and back of the hand.
Sometimes the scalenes referral pain gets misdiagnosed as carpal
tunnel syndrome. Even though the scalenes are aggravated by the
same things that aggravate carpal tunnel, the pain distribution
is in the wrong location. Carpal tunnel usually affects the thumb,
index, and middle fingers only.
Treatment of Scalene Syndrome
Massage therapy works to decrease the scalene muscle spasms and pain.
If the scalene muscle spasms are compressing the artery and nerves,
massage therapy is a great treatment for decreasing the compression.
During treatment you might feel the hand pain reproduced every
time the therapist works a knot in the neck. This is the scalene
muscle trigger point that is causing the shoulder, arm, chest, and
hand pain. With treatment the hand pain will decrease in intensity
and frequency. Many people notice improved neck range of motion
and have less neck pain. Some people have headaches associated with
scalene muscle spasms, which usually get better with massage therapy
treatments.
Stretching is often incorporated with treatment. You should perform
the stretches at home to speed your recovery and decrease the neck
muscle spasms.
