Massage Therapy for Upper Trapezius Pain
Massage therapy is a fantastic treatment to decrease muscle spasms
and pain. When some muscles spasm they can create neck pain, stiffness,
dull pain, aches, twinges, burning, or headaches. The pain can get
worse at the end of the day, especially on the computer. This is a
common muscle spasm with tension and migraine headaches.
Upper Trapezius Pain
The upper trapezius muscle runs from the back of your head and spinous
process of the neck to the collar bone and shoulder blade. The trapezius
muscle helps lift the shoulder and shoulder blades toward your ears.
It also helps hold your head up during the day. This muscle is very
important when working at the computer or when your head is forward.
Slouching and rounding of the shoulders tends to overwork this muscle,
eventually leading to pain and injury. When the upper trapezius
muscle is injured it begins producing soreness, stiffness, or dull
pain localized to the trapezius muscle. If the muscle injury gets
worse the pain can become sharper or stabbing. It also can begin
to radiate pain from the muscle up to the base of the skull. If
the front of the trapezius muscle is injured, it will radiate pain
above the ear and toward the eye. Almost like a question mark or
circular pattern to the eye.
People often say they rub their own neck for relief or beg friends
to do it. Sometimes pressing on the sore spot will send pain toward
the eye. The spot they found was a trapezius trigger point, and
is a sign of muscle injuries. Trigger points in the trapezius are
often associated with tension and migraine headaches.
Trapezius trigger points contribute to headaches when a person
spends their time at a computer or other head down activities. The
muscle begins to get sore and helps trigger the headaches. Tension
or migraine headaches can become frequent with trapezius trigger
points. If icing the trapezius or taking ibuprofen helps decrease
the headache intensity, then the trigger points are contributing
to the headaches development.
Treatment of Upper Trapezius Pain
Massage therapy works to decrease the trapezius muscle spasms and
pain. If the trapezius muscle spasms are contributing to headaches,
treatment works to decrease headache intensity, frequency, and duration.
During treatment you might feel the neck, head, or eye pain reproduced
every time the therapist works a knot in the neck. This is the upper
trapezius muscle trigger point that is causing the neck, head, and
eye pain. With treatment the neck, head, and muscle pain will decrease
in intensity and frequency. Many people feel better neck range of
motion and have less neck pain after treatment. People will feel
their headaches developing less often or starting later in the day.
The headaches will begin to go away with a little rest and ice.
People will usually have less bouts of neck pain during the year.
Stretching is often incorporated with treatment. You should perform
the stretches at home to speed your recovery and decrease the neck
pain and muscle spasms.
If you feel like your trapezius muscle trigger points are contributing
to either your headaches or neck pain, consider massage therapy
for your treatment. Please look for a skilled and trained therapist
who frequently works on upper trapezius muscle pain.
